CONSERVATION of HISTORIC WOODEN STRUCTURES

FIRST ANNOUNCEMENT (2004, May)
CALL FOR PAPERS

Florence, 2005, February

AIMS of the CONFERENCE
Buildings and Structures in Wood are found all over the world and include both outstanding works as well as simple constructions of “vernacular architecture”. Besides it is interesting to note the increasingly frequent reference, in contemporary architecture, to the tree and to the forest as the primordial shelter of the man.

The continuous appraisal of interesting carpentries existing in the world in an extremely large variety, the generally poor condition in which they are usually to be found, the diffused idea that “new” materials like reinforced concrete, steel, titanium … are better and in general more reliable than wood, the alien techniques often used to “repair” them, the daily destruction of valuable specimens are a few of the reasons which require a full debate on the matter.

Some more specific subjects to debate are the increasing awareness that load bearing structures are essential components of Monuments and a significant part of our Heritage, and therefore embody special values like creativity, inventiveness and aesthetics as well as technological significance. On the other hand a large number of very ancient wood Structures perform very honourably.

Repair Principles are similar in the different Countries but the practice of replacement is still very diffused especially where wood and wood craftsmanship are cheaply and easily available.

Today newest technologies and materials like Wood Composites and Fibre Composites are extensively used for the repair of ancient structures but all the same the combined behaviour of wood and these composites is not completely understood.

After a few international Meetings on general topics such as the conservation of Load Bearing Wooden Structures, the Mexico City Document on Historic Wooden Structures, the Recommendations elaborated by the ICOMOS Committee ISCARSAH (International Scientific Committee for Analysis and Restoration of Structures of Architectural Heritage), it appears to be time to call all specialists to share their reflections and experiences in order to enable the widest possible discussion.

With reference to the main subject of Wooden Historic Structures, the principal themes of the present Event are: Building Technology, Specimen Documentation, Degradation, Security Evaluation, Theory and Principles of Conservation, Propping, Repair Techniques, Calculations, Dimensioning of the Consolidation Devices and others.

Preservation of the 20th Century Architecture and the World Heritage

Heritage at Risk
Moscow. September 2005
It is a well known fact that Russian Avant-garde and Constructivism of the 1920s-early 1930s are one of the most important contributions to the early years of the International Modern Movement in architecture. But the deadline for rescuing parts of the 20th Century potential World Heritage properties located in Russia is to be passed within the next 5 years.

The 14th Symposium of the ICOMOS International Wood Committee

The 14th Symposium of the ICOMOS International Wood Committee will take place in Patzcuaro, Michoacan, Mexico November 10 to 15th. As you may know, David Michelmore and I have been interested in increasing Wood Committee activities in Latin America during our term so we were particularly pleased when long time committee member Guadaloupe Zepeda Martinez agreed to undertake organizing this symposium.
